HCS Beats the State and Nation on ACT Scores!
Habersham County ACT Scores Exceed State and Nation
Habersham County Schools learned today that the school system has been listed as a “Top ACT School District” by the Georgia Department of Education. Habersham County seniors last year exceeded both the state and the national average, posting an average composite score of 21.2 on the ACT. Georgia public schools last year averaged 20.3, and the national average was 21.1.The ACT is an achievement test designed to measure student readiness for college. The exam includes four assessments: English, reading, mathematics and science.
Jim Van Hooser, in his fourth year as principal, credits the results to various factors.
"We have increased gifted, honors, and Advanced Placement course offerings over the past few years, as well as an emphasis on getting more students to take the test," he said. "We are excited about this information because this is another key indicator that we are not only increasing the number of graduates but also increasing the preparedness of those who are graduating."
Superintendent Robert Costley sees the state’s announcement as another piece of evidence of the supportive, education-centered community in Habersham County.
“This is great news for our students, parents, and faculty and staff,” said Superintendent Robert Costley. “It’s one important sign that our seniors are leaving Habersham Central with a competitive edge when it comes to college readiness. It also represents years of hard work by our students and faculty members in grades K-12—and years of support from our parents and community. Our challenge now is to use this news as a positive spark to help us achieve even greater things in the future.”
