Evan Oglesby, former NFL player, visited Demorest Elementary on Friday, August 31 for a special back to school celebration.  Oglesby played 6 years in the NFL. He played for the Baltimore Ravens,  Dallas Cowboys, and Miami Dolphins.  He talked to the students about setting goals, maximizing their potential, and  realizing their dreams.   Oglesby told the students that when he was working to meet his goal of playing in the NFL, he looked at himself in the mirror every day and said, "I am somebody.  I will be successful."  He led students to repeat these words as a chant.   The message Oglesby shared fits well with the school's code of conduct:  I promise to be caring, I promise to be responsible, I promise to learn.  Dr. Yearwood, Principal, kicked off the celebration by sharing the school's progress with students and staff:  DES beat the state scores on 2017 Milestones by double digits in all academic areas.  DES was named as a Title I Highest Performing School for 2018 which indicates that the school is among the top 5% of Title I schools in GA.  DES has the 2nd best student attendance at the elementary level in HCSS for 2017.  DES has received Beating the Odds designation by the state for 6 consecutive years.    DES met their 2017 school improvement goals for reading and math.   The students and staff were excited and enjoyed hearing about their accomplishments.     At the end of the assembly one student's name was drawn to win a football signed by many NFL players.   Erna Dowdy, PE teacher, led the students and staff in relay games that contributed to the festivities.  Oglesby participated in the student/staff relay, and the students really enjoyed cheering him on.  Chad Mann, School Resource Officer, served as DJ and played music for the event.
